Ai-Ais is one of Namibia's famous hot springs resorts, situated at the southern end of the breathtaking Fish River Canyon. In the Nama's language, 'Ai-Ais' means 'burning water'. The thermal bath immediately next to the spring is apopular recreation resort, especially during the winter. The water is particularly soothing for people suffering from rheumatism.
There is one luxury flat containing two single beds, a fridge, hotplate, bathroom, bedding & towels. There are also four-bed flats and huts available. Neither cutlery nor crockery are provided.
The camping sites are suitable for a maximum of eight people and two vehicles, one caravan or one tent per site. There is also a restaurant. Large groups must book restaurant meals at least 24 hours in advance.
From May to August, Ai-Ais is the starting point for hiking trips into the Fish River Canyon. In addition to the breathtaking scenery, a rich wildlife and numerous birds can be observed here.
Because of it's location in the bed of the Fish River, Ai Ais has always been vulnerable to flooding during years of exceptional rains and has been washed away several times. The most recent flooding to Ai Ais occurred in 1999, after which the facilities needed extensive renovation and repair.
Please Note: Ai-Ais is closed for a complete refurbishment, and is tentatively scheduled to re-open on 1st October 2008.
