Ndumo Water Wilderness

Ndumo Water Wilderness Camp, South Africa Proclaimed in the 1920s, Ndumo Game Reserve is one of South Africa's oldest and most scenic parks. It is situated in northern KwaZulu Natal and just south of the Mozambique border. Nyamithi and Banzi Pans, surrounded by beautiful yellow fever trees, are the focal points in the reserve. These pans are on the Pongola and Usutu floodplains and attract wildlife in large numbers.

Ndumo is not well known, even to many South Africans, as accommodation has previously been limited. Now, Ndumo Wilderness Camp has been built on the edge of Banzi Pan. Many of our guests travel to Ndumo after visiting the Kruger area to experience the wonderful contrast in scenery.

Ndumo Wilderness Camp is in the "Wilderness Zone" of the reserve, in an area not open to the general public. The camp is set in the most beautiful location, and offers eight superbly appointed tented rooms with en suite bathrooms. There is a separate pub/dining area. The entire camp is raised up on a wooden deck and linked with a walkway several metres above the ground under a canopy of giant fig trees. There is a swimming pool.

Time at Ndumo Water Wilderness is spent on nature walks through forests of fig trees and through the bush, often tracking Rhino. Game drives in open 4x4 vehicles around the various pans are a highlight. A new activity we are offering is boating on Banzi Pan (water levels permitting). Tiger fishing here is great (especially on a fly-fishing rod), however this is done on a catch and release basis.

Good numbers of Black Rhino, White Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo and Crocodile occur, while Red Duiker, Giraffe, Nyala and Suni are all fairly common. Leopard and Hyaena are also found in the reserve. As an additional activity at Ndumo Water Wilderness, we can now offer day trips into Tembe Elephant Reserve to view Elephant.

Ndumo is considered by many to be the finest bird-watching locality in South Africa. Over 400 species 60% of South Africa's birds have been recorded in the area. Green Coucal, Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Pinkthroated Twinspot and African Broadbill are among the Ndumo "specials", resident throughout the year.
